Surfing: A Love Story with Waves

With great waves and a relaxed, inexpensive beach life, Bali is surfer's dream come true. It is also a good entry point to explore other surfing paradises in Ind onesia , whether on the southern coast of Java, on the western coast of Sumatra or in the Lesser Sunda islands (Nusa Tenggara). The best surfing season in Bali is May to October. The only exception is Sanur, which faces the east and can be surfed between November and April. Beginners will be happy to start in the Kuta Seminyak area, where gentle swells brea k on safe sand. These beaches, however, are also crowded and polluted.

Quieter waves suited for all surfers are found in Medewi on the west coast, or on Playground in the isle of NUsa Lembongan. Most surfers, however, come to Bali to ride the world class dream barrels found on the Bukit Peninsula , with a beautiful background of white sand beaches and limestone cliffs, crowned by the Uluwatu temple. Experienced surfers will have a go at Uluwatu , Pa dang - Padang, Dreamland, Bingin and the aptly-named IMpossibles. Lessskilled ones can practice their skills in easier spots like Gegeror Blabangan. All are dotted with spiky reefs that have claimed much surfer's flesh. Booties are a must.

Nusa Dua, Sanur, and Nusa Lembongan also have strong, challenging waves for those ready to leave their surving Mecca on the Bukit. What to Do Inland While most tourists think of Bali as a beach destination, Balinese see the mountains as the abode of the gods and are wary of the ocean.
