GETTING THERE AND AROUND
The way to Kuta or Ubud. In all cases, it is better to buy your ticket ahead of time at the terminal, or from a trafel agent. There are various level of comforts, the most expensive buses have air-conditioning and are quite comfortable. Don't necessarily expect a tranquil journey though. Most buses play very loud music or videos. Anxious passengers will be kept awake by the hair raising speeds at which the drivers cut through the dense traffic.
Visas
New visa requirements were introduced by the Ind onesia government in February 2004. Travellers from some countries (including France , the UK , and Germany ) get a 30 day tourist visa on arrival for US$25. while others have to request it at an Ind onesia embassy or consulate. If you request you visa at the embassy prior to departure, you can obtain a 60 day permit. None of these tourist visas can be extended locally.
If you plan to stay more than 60 days, you'll have to leave the country to get a new visa (many tourists do so by going to Singapore ). You can also request a business visa or a socio cultural visa, which can be extended localy until a maximum of six mont hs. For both you'll need a sponsor letter from a person or organisation in Ind onesia .
There has been a lot of uproar in Ind onesia over the new visa policy. Many travel agents feared that it would reduce arrivals. Some people pointed out that the reduced length of the visa on arrival will limit the length of stay of trafellers. Although this has no impact on starrated hotels catering to package tours, it may reduce the number of backpackers on extended trips those who bring income to faraway places, and patron the small hotels and restaurants owned by local people.
There may still be changes in the visa policy, so you should inquire at the nearest Ind onesia consulate at least two weeks before departure. In all cases, you'll need a passport with as least a six mont h validity. Keep safely.
